Introduction

When I joined the team, the team was facing a huge challenge:

"How to display the data from our database and website directly to user all the time?"

We have a website that providing users a reliable data that evaluating thousands of brands' impact on three dimensions: people, planet, and politics. Our founder desired to pair users with brands sharing same value.

However, a survey result indicates that most of our users like to use phone to shop online. Switching between different pages in phones are not a pleasant process. Therefore, we needed to design a solution to enhance the mobile user experience.

As a result, the team decided to design an extension application for both desktop and mobile browser like Safari and Chomre. Being as a product designer, I was responsible for doing user researches and design the prototypes.

Low Fidelity User Testing

During the user testing, we asked the testees to shout out loud what they think about the app. After analyzing the qualitative data from 6 testees, we were excited that our design made them feel "suprised" and "useful." But more than the positive feedbacks, the research process focused more on those "frustrated" experience.

Desktop Design

After designing the high fildelity prototype of the mobile extension, we designed the desktop extension in order to make it easier for programmers to launch the application.

It was much easier to design the desktop version due to the generousity of space. lots of problems met in mobile versions are no longer needed to be considered.

Mobile Onboarding Procces

We spent most of our times designing the onboarding process. While we have done comparative analysis with other brands onboarding process, we still did 1 round of user testing to evaluate the process. Then, we iterated the design for two rounds and interviewed a small sample of users in order to have the best design.

User Testing

User Testing of onboarding process was not positive at first. But we were glad that we could find so many problems at the very first stage. Therefore, we could remember this "frustrated points" and avoid them.

Reflection

In our expectation, we want to make this process much more customized. Therefore, users should set their desired evaluations. For instance, some users might care more about environmental impact than personal impact. However, due to a lack of funding, the services shut down last year, and we could not explore our ideas in real designs any more.

However, this experience was one of my favorite internship experiences. Being as a product designer, I was able to experience the whole process from rough ideas into final application. The feeling when I saw the real product was like see a new birth baby.

Being in a startup was a precious experience that enabled me to think more than just a researcher or a designer. I have to consider how to utilize the limited resources in the most efficient and essential way. This experience helped me to think about the product in the way of a manager rather than just a participant.
